Property Taxes

The Town of Industry's fiscal year runs from January to December. Taxes are generally committed and the bills are mailed out in August.

A 30-day Lien Notice will go out in mid-June. The Lien will then be recorded at the Franklin County Registry of Deeds in mid-July (30 days from the Lien Notice). The lien will then mature into a foreclosure in 18 months from when the lien was recorded.

Property owners now have the ability to pay current property taxes online with a credit/debit card. As with in-office card payments, there will be a 2.5% service charge added to the payment amount. This service is offered through the State of Maine's online payment portal.

For more information regarding the property tax process or an address change for your tax bill, please contact the Town Office at 207-778-5050.

Motor Vehicle Excise

In Maine, the excise tax is based on the MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price) of the vehicle when it was sold new. That is why Maine law provides that each new automobile, SUV, van, or light truck registered for the first time must be accompanied by the Monroney Label (window sticker). This provides equal assessment for everyone regardless of the original purchase price. Heavy trucks, registered over 26,000 pounds, are excised based on the purchase price, and the municipality is reimbursed for the remainder from the State of Maine.

The law provides that excise tax is calculated using the following method

  • First-year 24 mils/$1,000

  • Second year 17.50 mils/$1,000

  • Third year 13.50 mils/$1,000

  • Fourth-year 10 mils/$1,000

  • Fifth-year 6.50 mils/$1,000

  • Sixth and subsequent years 4 mils/$1,000

If you know the "sticker price" of a new car you can calculate the tax by subtracting the destination charges and multiplying the remainder by .024.

For example

  • Sticker price: $26,000

  • Destination charges: $550

  • $26,000 - $550=$25,450

  • $25,450 x .024=$610.80

  • The excise tax due will be $610.80
